The Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) plays a vital role in offering a supportive environment for families with seriously ill or injured children, providing not just essential resources but also a comforting and welcoming space. As they prepared to launch their new facility, their vision extended beyond practical support to creating a truly home-like atmosphere for these families during incredibly challenging times.
Understanding this goal, RMHC partnered with eyecandy to develop a wayfinding system that is both informative and reassuring. The key was to create signage that minimizes confusion and eases navigation within the facility, without evoking a sterile or clinical feel.
Our approach focused on developing memorable and cohesive themes for the signage, carefully integrating them into a design aesthetic that complements a residential setting. Throughout this process, we remained committed to upholding the highest accessibility standards for all visitors.
Each floor was given a distinct theme inspired by the interior finishes developed by the interiors team. For example, the Sea Floor features playful marine characters assigned to each suite room, while the Sunrise, Forest, and Garden floors each carry their own cohesive visual stories.
The sign system thoughtfully recognizes the donors who made the facility possible. Each primary room sign is paired with a smaller companion plaque that acknowledges the individual or organization’s contribution. This approach ensures meaningful recognition while maintaining a clear visual hierarchy, allowing the donor message to feel integrated and respectful without competing with the main identification sign.
